Andhra University is not only one of the country's oldest educational institutions, but it was also the first to be conceived as a residential and teaching-cum-affiliating university focused primarily on postgraduate teaching and research. The University has always been exposed to continual self-evaluation to maintain standards and meet stated goals. Furthermore, in April 2002, the University underwent assessment and accreditation by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) to ensure excellence in Higher Education. The Peer Committee evaluated the institution's strengths and flaws and gave the university an "A" grade, giving it the highest percentage among Andhra Pradesh's state universities.
The University campus has 23 men's dormitories with a capacity of more than 3200 students and 10 women's hostels with a capacity of more than 2000 seats. Two hostels have been built specifically for international students. The University contains four Guest Houses, a Central Canteen, as well as four canteens located throughout the campus, a Press and Publication division, Women Waiting Halls, a Faculty Club, and Schools for Employees' Children. On-campus, there are also student services and welfare centers such as a post office, banking facilities, a university job and guidance bureau, and training.
