Overview

University of Kerala is listed among the very first 16 universities in the country and was established in 1937 in Kerala, Tamil Nadu. By the each passing year, the University of Kerala grew and shrunk physically and transformed itself in multiple ways. It is hard to summarise what the Kerala University is in a brief space. It was started with only 10 colleges within the State of Travancore, which were at that time affiliated to the Madras University, became the affiliated colleges of the University of Travancore. The University currently comprises sixteen faculties and 41 teaching and research departments in addition to study centres and other departments. The Departments' primary responsibilities include teaching, research, and knowledge expansion. They largely concentrate on doctorate research, post-graduate (masters) programmes, and MPhil programmes (1-year research degree).

The university is trying to proceed with the vision including institutional autonomy and academic freedom, campus rooted but internationally oriented, research driven and learning focused, technologically sophisticated but community dependent, publicly accountable and socially committed, professionally attuned but humanly sensitive and above all, and have strong but impartial public governance.

While the mission of the University is to be recognized as the hub of original research and innovative thinking that caters to the needs of the Industry and Policy Makers, strengthen the Consultancy services of the University through a full-fledged University- Industry tie-up and thereby tap resources of the Industry for its teaching, research and extension services, produce young entrepreneurs who can provide job opportunities rather than be job seekers, produce internationally known leaders, scholars/scientists and sports persons, and actively respond to the momentous issues of our society and socio-political environment of the world etc.
